Netsuke are miniature Japanese sculptures that were invented in the 17th century. The kosode and kimono, traditional Japanese garments, had no pockets.
Objects normally kept in a pocket (pipes, tobacco, money, seals, medicines), were put into containers called sagemono and hung by cords from the garments' sashes (obi). These containers were either a pouch, small woven basket or decorative box (inro) held shut by small, sliding beads called ohime. The fastener that secured the cord at the top of the sash was a carved, button-llike toggle called a netsuke.
The netsuke served both a decorative and practical purpose and were most popular during the Edo period (1615 - 1868). Netsuke evolved over time from a strictly utilitarian object, into one of artistic merit.
They were carved from a variety of materials including ivory, boxwood, precious stones, teeth (hippopotamus, whale, tiger, bear, boar), boar tusk, clay and porcelain, lacquer, rhinoceros horn, hornbill ivory, metal, black coral, walrus tusk, bamboo, agate, jet, whale bone, and nuts (walnut, tagua). Quality was variable, as these were, at the time, a very common, everyday object. Wealthier people had finer netsuke, and it was easy to tell the status of a person by the quality of their netsuke.
There were many forms - round, long, with mirror lids, lacy, masks, and ones with hidden or moving parts. Netsuke display every aspect of Japanese culture, including its rich folklore and and religion, crafts, trades and profession, people, and creatures both real and mythical. One form was the shunga netsuke.
Within the closed and conservative Japanese society, the erotic or shunga netsuke enabled the Japanese to freely represent thei views, customs without repression of the ruler. Shunga netsuke also helped in ancient sex education and were popular gifts for newlyweds.
Each detail is clearly visible, and the positions vary. Some were based on the Kama Sutra or other Indian sex guides, while many positions came purely from the artists imagination, and are just impossible for a real person to do!
With the decline of traditional Japanese garments for everyday wear, there is less demand for netsuke as a utilitarian object, and more as an artistic item. New netsuke are still produced, mainly for export, and antique ones are highly collectible.

Researchers have looked at the signs and symptoms that patients experienced in the months and even years leading up to a heart attack. One of the symptoms for men is ED (erectile dysfunction).
"The heart, together with the arteries that feed it, is one big muscle, and when it starts to fail, the symptoms can show up in many parts of the body," says cardiologist Jonathan Goldstein of St. Michael's Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Difficulty achieving or keeping erections is common in men with coronary artery disease, but often the connection is not made. One survey of European men being treated for cardiovascular disease found that two out of three had suffered from erectile dysfunction for months or years before they were diagnosed with heart trouble.
Just as arteries around the heart can narrow and harden, so can those that supply the penis. And because those arteries are smaller, they tend to show damage much sooner - as much as three to four YEARS before the disease would otherwise be detected.
Recent studies on the connection between ED and cardiovascular disease have been so convincing that doctors now consider it the standard of care to do a full cardiovascular workup when a man comes in complaining of ED, according to cardiologist Goldstein. He says, "In recent years, there's been pretty clear evidence that there's a substantially increased risk of heart attack and death in patients with erectile dysfunction."
ED caused by heart disease isn't immediately distinguishable from ED caused by other issues. If you have problems getting or maintining an erection, that's reason enough to visit your doctor to investigate why. "Today, any patient who comes in with ED is considered a cardiovascular patient until proven otherwise," says Goldstein.

Erotic art has been produced in Asian cultures for centuries - long before it was prevalent in western society.
Some of the most sensual and artistic among erotic art is the traditional Japanese "Shunga" paintings. Shunga had its beginnings in the 7th or 8th century AD, and reached its creative peak during the 12th - 18th century. It is thought that shunga were initially inspired by illustrations in Chinese medicine manuals.
Shunga translates as "springtime pictures". Spring was a common euphemism for sex during those times. While the literal meaning of the word is significant, it is really a contraction of 'shunkyu-higi-ga', the Japanese pronunciation for Chinese sets of twelve scrolls depicting the twelve sexual acts that the crown prince had to carry out as an expression of yin yang.
These erotic pictures were produced and sold either as small folded pillow-books called enpon or as single prints. The Shunga scrolls and pillow books were popular for several reasons. Apart from the raw pleasure of viewing sexually stimulating erotic images, the shunga prints were used for the sexual education of young men and women from wealthy families. Written and illustrated with Samurai warriors and Geisha pleasure women in mind, the erotic literature dealt with ancient lessons for achieving sexual pleasure.
It was a tradition for the bride of a Daimyo (a high-standing feudal lord) or Hatamoto (Samurai) to bring a collection of Shunga prints as part of her dowry.

The sexually explicit Shunga pictures usually featured fully clothed couples in various sexual positions with expressions of sexual ecstasy. Nudity was not inherently erotic in Japan – people were used to seeing the opposite sex naked in communal baths. It also served an artistic purpose; it helped the viewer identify courtesans and foreigners, and it drew attention to the parts of the body that were revealed, i.e., the genitalia.
The majority of shunga depict the sexual relations of ordinary people with the occasional Dutch or Portugese foreigner thrown in!A whole variety of possibilities are shown - men seducing women, women seducing men; men and women cheat on each other; all ages from virginal teenagers to old married couples; heterosexual, homosexual, all types of fetishes and even octopi were occasionally featured. Courtesans also form the subject of many shunga. Young kabuki actors, many of whom worked as gigolos, are oftem shown with samurai. Another common theme is a couple being watched by a third person.
The story can often be found in the text and objects in the picture. These intimate scenes contain an abundance of sexual symbolism. For example, the bonsai trees take on the suggestion of the male's stout penis while the silk robes symbolize the curves and undulation of the female vagina. Plum blossoms represent virginity and tissues symbolize impending ejaculation.
Shunga is particularly known for the exaggerated sizes in the depiction of female and male genitalia. These features were shown much larger than life because, given the miniature size of these pillow books, the details would barely be noticed otherwise.
