The Song of Songs, also known as the Song of Solomon, Solomon's Song of Songs, Canticle of Canticles or Canticles, is one of the shortest books in the Bible, with only 117 verses.
Scholars have noted that the Song of Songs shows many similarities to other ancient Near Eastern love poetry, especially some Sumerian erotic passages, and the Ramesside Egyptian love poetry.
Awake, O north wind; and come, thou south; blow upon my garden, that the spices thereof may flow out. Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat his pleasant fruits
~ Song of Solomon (Canticles) 4:16
It has been regarded by some Christian theologians either as a typological set of songs describing the relationship of Christ and the church or an allegory of the soul's relationship to Christ and God.
Pope John Paul II in his five year catechesis on the Theology of the Body dedicated a large portion of the section on marriage to a study of the Song of Songs. The Pope speaks of the way in which the lovers in the Song provide a true and liberating vision of the love that results when men and women allow the driving fire of agape to penetrate and permeate eros.
Pope Benedict XVI's Deus Caritas Est (God is Love, 2006) refers to the Song of Songs in both its literal and allegorical meaning, stating that erotic love (eros) and self-donating love (agape) is shown there as the two halves of true love, which is open to giving and receiving.
Modern day musicians have used it for their songs. Israeli pop superstar, Ofra Haza recorded the song entitled "Love Song" on her 1988 album Shaday. It was sung a capella and is a direct quotation of Song of Songs 8:6, 7. Kate Bush has a song on her 1993 album The Red Shoes, entitled "The Song of Solomon", containing lines from the book. And Gothic rock band Christian Death have a song called "Song of Songs", on their 1987 album The Scriptures. It is almost a literal translation of the book in modern English.
Scholarly discussion has not reached any consensus on the Song of Songs and leaves all possibilities open.
