Erotic Biblical Writings - Song of Solomon

The Song of Songs, also known as the Song of Solomon, Solomon's Song of Songs, Canticle of Canticles or Canticles, is one of the shortest books in the Bible, with only 117 verses.

Scholars have noted that the Song of Songs shows many similarities to other ancient Near Eastern love poetry, especially some Sumerian erotic passages, and the Ramesside Egyptian love poetry.

Awake, O north wind; and come, thou south; blow upon my garden, that the spices thereof may flow out. Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat his pleasant fruits

~ Song of Solomon (Canticles) 4:16

There are many interpretations.

It has been regarded by some Christian theologians either as a typological set of songs describing the relationship of Christ and the church or an allegory of the soul's relationship to Christ and God.

Pope John Paul II in his five year catechesis on the Theology of the Body dedicated a large portion of the section on marriage to a study of the Song of Songs. The Pope speaks of the way in which the lovers in the Song provide a true and liberating vision of the love that results when men and women allow the driving fire of agape to penetrate and permeate eros.

Pope Benedict XVI's Deus Caritas Est (God is Love, 2006) refers to the Song of Songs in both its literal and allegorical meaning, stating that erotic love (eros) and self-donating love (agape) is shown there as the two halves of true love, which is open to giving and receiving.

Modern day musicians have used it for their songs. Israeli pop superstar, Ofra Haza recorded the song entitled "Love Song" on her 1988 album Shaday. It was sung a capella and is a direct quotation of Song of Songs 8:6, 7. Kate Bush has a song on her 1993 album The Red Shoes, entitled "The Song of Solomon", containing lines from the book. And Gothic rock band Christian Death have a song called "Song of Songs", on their 1987 album The Scriptures. It is almost a literal translation of the book in modern English.

Scholarly discussion has not reached any consensus on the Song of Songs and leaves all possibilities open.

Gods of the Phallus

Ancient Roman monastery monks wrote about a rather unique temple in Velia. This temple's god had no face or body body. Instead, this fertility god was represented in the form of a penis and called "Mutunus Tutunus."

Phalluses were erected all over this temple and sometimes the penis statues would be crowned with flowers. It was said that on the wedding day, a bride was supposed to straddle the phallus of Mutunus Tutunus, to prepare themselves for intercourse.

Roman bronze statuette of Mutunus Tutunus, discoverd in Picardy, northern France. It is made of two parts, with the removeable top section concealing a giant phallus.
The name, Mutunus Tutunus, is related to two Latin slang words for penis, Muto (or mutto, mutonium) and titinus.

The equivalent Greek god is Priapus or Priapos, a minor rustic fetility god, and protector of livestock, fruit plants, gardens and male genitalia. He was depicted in human form with a disproportionately large, permanent erection, which is where the medical term, priapism, derived.

Gives new meaning to the phrase, "He's a prick!" LOL

The Act of Coition

Erotic literature was found in many ancient cultures and most had some type of  'love manual'. The Perfumed Garden (of Sensual Delight) is a 15th century Arabic sex manual, similar to the Kama Sutra.

This book had chapters on a variety of subjects such as: "prescriptions for increasing the Dimensions of small members and for making them splendid", "The Sundry Names given to the Sexual Organs of a Woman" and even "how the gender of the child that is to be born may be known."

Chapter VI begins:

KNOW, O Vizir (God be good to you!), if you would have pleasant coition, which ought to give an equal share of happiness to the two combatants and be satisfactory to both, you must first of all toy with the woman, excite her with kisses, by nibbling and sucking her lips, by caressing her neck and cheeks. Turn her over in the bed, now on her back, now on her stomach, till you see by her eyes that the time for pleasure is near, as I have mentioned in the preceding chapter, and certainly I have not been sparing with my observations thereupon.

Then when you observe the lips of a woman to tremble and get red, and her eyes to become languishing, and her sighs to become quicker, know that she is hot for coition; then get between her thighs, so that your member can enter into her vagina. If you allow my advice, you will enjoy a pleasant embrace, which will give you the greatest satisfaction, and leave with you a delicious remembrance.

Clouds and Rain, Yin and Yang

In early Chinese literature, sexual acts had metaphorical terms. "Clouds" in literature referred to a woman's ova and vaginal secretions, while "rain" referred to a man's emission of semen.

The Chou dynasty (770BC to 222BC) had a Taoist doctrine although Taoism was not yet a formal religion. They divided men and women into the yin and the yang. Women were believed to have an unexhaustable supply of yin essence. While men had a limited supply of yang. It was forbidden for men to use up their yang essence without acquiring plenty of yin essence. Before a man was allowed to ejaculate, he had to prolong it, making a woman orgasm several times to acquire her yin essence. If a man ejaculated or used up his yang essence without taking any yin essence, the ancient Chinese believed it would cause health problems.

Masturbation by men was seen as unhealthy and forbidden, and believed to cause a complete loss of his vital yang essence. Women could masturbate freely as they were said to have an unlimited yin. Medical texts only warned women against masturbation with foreign objects which were believed to injure the womb and internal sexual organs. Nocturnal emissions or 'wet dreams' that men had were seen as a health problem for men.

During this time, female homosexuality was widespread, but male homosexuality was rare. Male homosexuality was forbidden because there would be a complete loss of yang essence on the part of both men. Since women were said to have an unlimited yin essence, there was no loss of yin in female to female relations. It was during the Han dynasty when male homosexuality figures reached the same standard as among other societies.

At that time, prostitution was accepted by the Chinese. Men thought that they could gain more yin from prostitutes than from normal women. They believed that since such women were with so many men, they acquired more yang essence from them, and could also give a patron more yang essence than he lost.

Egyptian Erotic Papyrus

This New Kingdom papyrus was found at Deir el Medine. It has an interesting, and funny mixture of erotic scenes and animal satire. On the surface, the satires appear to be straight forward: various animals are engaged in human activities - from playing the harp to waging war, including a lotus crowned cat making love to a goose. These kinds of depictions have been seen in other ancient finds and seem to have amused the ancient Egyptians.

Some have speculated on what this was, including, a depiction of whorehouse scenes, ancient pornography, a satire on the sexual desires of elderly men, a sex manual or was it depicting fertility rites?

Greco-Roman Sex Manuals

In ancient Greece, a sex manual was written by Philaenis of Samos, thought to be a hetaira (courtesan) of the Hellenistic period (3rd-1st century B.C.).

Preserved by a series of fragmentary papyruses, it served as a source of inspiration for the Roman poet Ovid's book, Ars Amatoria, written approximately 3 B.C. It is partially a sex manual and partially a book on the art of love. It provides teaching in three areas of interest: how and where to find women in Rome, how to seduce them and how to prevent others from stealing them!

The first two books, aimed at men, contained sections which covered such topics as not forgetting her birthday, letting her miss you - but not for long, and not asking about her age.

He advises that, if one is accompanying a lady to the races at the Circus Maximus, one should gallantly brush the dust from her gown. If there isn't any dust there, brush it nonetheless. A young man should promise the moon to the object of his affections in letters - even a beggar can be rich in promises!

In the third book, he gives advice to women on being attractive to a man, including making up, but in private, being wary of false lovers and trying young and older lovers.

It seems that much of the advice is applicable to today as well!

In the years immediately following its publication, the Ars Amatoria became a victim of moral outcry. All of Ovid's works were burned by Savonarola in Florence, Italy in 1497; Christopher Marlowe's translation was banned in 1599, and another English translation of the Ars amatoria was seized by U.S. Customs in 1930. Despite all of that, Ars amatoria has remained a topic of study in Latin literature classes around the world.

Yin Taosim

Yin Taosim was created by a group of Taoist philosophers during the Eastern Han Dynasty (A.D. 25-220).

In case you're confused as to what is yin, and what is yang: yin is female energy, and yang is male energy. An easy way to remember which is which, "yin" sounds like "in" and female sex organs are 'in' the body, whereas "yang" sounds like "hang" and the male sex organs 'hang' outside the body.

Firmly rooted in the importance of human sexual expression, this school of Taoists wrote volume after volume of sex manuals including "Su-Nu Ching" (Manual of Lady Purity), "Yu Fang Mi Chueh" (Secret Codes of the Jade Room), the "Art of the Bedchamber" and "Yu Fang Chih Yao" (Important Guidelines of the Jade Room).

Oldest Sex Manual

The oldest sex manuals in the world have been traced to China. These sex manuals were written more than 2500 years before the birth of Christ.

The legendary Yellow Emperor, Huang-Ti (2697-2598 B.C.), has been regarded as the originator of the traditional sex practices and beliefs. The ancient "Handbooks of Sex," composed nearly five thousand years ago, pre-date anything produced in the West by well over 2000 years. A book called "Su-Nui Ching' was the sexual bible and medical guidebook for many generarions.

Ancient Chinese Erotic Art

Erotic motifs and designs were used on porcelain ware (vases, bowls, plates) by the Manchu emperors as sexual embellishment.  It has been established that such erotic designs were painted on Chinese earthenware in the first and third centuries.

Erotic art was also found on the soles of ceramic shoes, inlaid boxes, silk and rice paper paintings, as well as snuff bottles.

Sounding or Pressing with the Nails

The Kama Sutra has a whole chapter on the use of fingernails...

When love becomes intense, pressing with the nails or scratching the body with them is practiced, and it is done on the following occasions: on the first visit; at the time of setting out on a journey; on the return from a journey; at the time when an angry lover is reconciled; and, lastly, when the woman is intoxicated. But pressing with the nails is not a usual thing except with those who are intensely passionate. It is employed, together with biting, by those to whom the practice is agreeable.

And even, how the nails should appear:

The qualities of good nails are that they should be bright, well set, clean, entire, convex, soft, and glossy in appearance. Nails are of three kinds according to their size: small, middling, large.

Large nails, which give grace to the hands, and attract the hearts of women from their appearance, are possessed by the Bengalese.

Small nails, which can be used in various ways, and are to be applied only with the object of giving pleasure, are possessed by the people of the southern districts.

Middling nails, which contain the properties of both the above kinds, belong to the people of Maharashtra.

When a person presses the chin, the breasts, the lower lip, or the jaghana of another so softly that no scratch or mark is left, but only the hair on the body becomes erect from the touch of the nails, and the nails themselves make a sound, it is called a "sounding or pressing with the nails."

  2. Avoid any additional stimulation like watching porn
  3. Concentrate on the entire body touches and sensations, learn Tantra Techniques
  4. Breathe properly
  5. Think about sex as something normal, usual and stay cool and calm

Ways to Avoid Premature Ejaculation

Back in the early to mid 1980s, I was a sexual surrogate at a NYC clinic that counseled men with a variety of sexual dysfunctions. I learned many ways that a man can avoid premature ejaculation. The methods will vary with each man, and generally are a combination of techniques. Here are some general things to avoid if you want to last longer:
  1. Heavy protein meals before intercourse - it prevents production and release of serotonin in the brain.
  2. Stimulants like coffee, sugar, alcohol, cigarettes, and cold remedies deplete your serotonin levels.
  3. Long term stress makes serotonin production more difficult.
